Regular run [Jan 27 2010]

Per the intermediate program, I had to do 5M. It was very cold. So I had my gloves and the ear muffs on along with the base layer. Chalked out a path and took off. Had slight shin splints on the left leg. Very little. Stopped and stretched. The calves were a little sore from the run day before. Not a show stopper.
Found it difficult to get in the 'zone', which I expected to in 2-2.5 miles.
Took the whole run really really slow. Haven't run consecutive days. So am apprehensive.
Anyways, all in all...it was great.
I don't think I am going to do the slated 3M today. I could, but I don't want to risk it.

Meals: Cereal + Milk for breakfast, Flamethrower chicken sandwich at Pizzeria Uno's (Richard's send off lunch) + coke for lunch, last night's cheesesteak sub + 6 cubes of Cadbury's Fruit & Nut for dinner.

Regular one [Jan 26 2010]

I finally found a good training program for intermediate half marathoners.
I am planning on following that. It seems a little too much. But will try to listen to my body.
So after Monday's day off, took off for a 4miler in the FiveFingers. Am getting a very good feeling now that my feet are adjusting to them. No shin splints, no sore plantar fasciitis! Yaay!
And since I have been doing the crunches on and off the last month I wasn't able to run, haven't had an attack of stitches either! Am just a little scared of the feet paining again. So am trying to maintain a slow pace (~10min/mile). And thats working out great - so far.

Distance: 4m
Time: 41min
Meals: Cereal + milk for breakfast, Sausage sandwich + a HUGE slice of coconut cake from Spence's (a weekly Amish market) for lunch, cheesesteak sandwich + fries + beer for dinner (it was Richard's send-off dinner).

Regular run [01/24/2010]

Decided to get into the routine. Dropped Manas and his mom to the airport, got back home, dressed, stretched and took off with Madhura and Maggy. It was a fun run. 2.57m in 26min.

Meals: उपमा + tea for breakfast, skipped lunch, rasam + rice for dinner.

Resuming running 2010 [01/19/2010]

Now that the foot's feeling a lot better, I decide to start back up.
3 miles in 32 minutes! Not bad at all! Especially when I haven't run in more than a month.
Used the Vibram Fivefingers. They felt easy to run in. No pain whatsoever! Infact, after the first 0.5m, I just let go of concentrating on mid-foot strike and running while watching the ground. It felt natural and normal.
Also, I finally got some lights to put on my cap. It's getting really dark. So I get those LED strobe lights that you clip on to the visor of your hat. It was pleasantly bright. Felt safer too.
I feel a lot more confident on giving the marathon a shot this year. But that's just after today's run. Let me get a better feel, then will update my target for the year.
Meals: (Cereal in the morning before leaving home + coffee) + (Quiznos turkey sub + bag of chips + coke) for lunch + (Daal Makhani + 3 rotis) for dinner and beer while playing poker with the guys.

Am going to try out this new site: LogYourRun. What bummed me out was that the free membership at MapMyRun did not get me reports beyond 3 months.
Here's a sample of the run:

First run of the year [01/07/2010]

Happy new year to all who read this blog.
2009 was a very very productive year for me, running vise. I started from zero and have a half marathon under my belt. Feels like quite an achievement. The marathon is still a distant goal. But finish one, I shall.
I really did not keep a thorough log of my runs this whole year, so I will not be able to post an annual total.
Since the last Jingle All The Way run in December, I have not been able to run. The pain in the foot really put me off. Went to 2 different doctors. The emergency doctor just asked me to wait it out. 3 more weeks of rest, icing, taping and anti-inflammatory Aleve and a foot specialist later, I ran 2.5 miles on the treadmill. The foot specialist saw the x-rays and (thankfully) told me that its not a stress fracture, but close. 'Strained bones' was what he said. The wall thickness of the bones of my feet have increased, meaning that they have been over-worked. So I need to take it easy. Wear shoes ALL the time. No running whatsoever. I just cannot do that. I mean, I rested for a month. I have no pain at all now. So I did a 2.5miler on the treadmill on Thursday 01/07. It was very very relaxing and refreshing. Have been playing racquetball too.
So while I was reading up on shoes and their effect on the foot mechanics, I came across Vibram's Five Fingers! And the concept of minimalistic barefoot running appealed to me. So me and Madhura got a pair each. I got the KSO (Keep Stuff Out) and Madhura got the Sprint ($80 each). They were really hard to find. Had to call a couple of stores and found Casual Adventure in Arlington had a few pairs left. Tried them on the whole of Saturday and played racquetball in them too. Very very relaxing. I have to try them on for running and see how they feel. Will they help with my foot problems? Time will tell. More on them in due course.

Goal this year: A marathon? Or is it too big a leap for me? Will update as I go.
